Katy Perry, Kendall Jenner and more rocked the '90s Gwen Stefani–inspired 'do.

In addition to the expected plethora of braids, there were several other trends happening in hair during the first weekend of Coachella, among them glitter parts, rainbow-hued locks and lots of double pigtail buns. The latter was perhaps the hottest look of the weekend among festivalgoers and top style setters including Katy Perry, Blonde Salad blogger Chiara Ferragni and Kendall Jenner, who wore the messy style at the 1OAK and Up&Down party with Bumble VIP cabanas.

"This look is so youthful and a refreshing take on pulling all your hair off your face," says celebrity hairdresser Sunnie Brook, who works with Alanis Morissette, Ashley Benson and Hannah Davis. "It gives you the freedom to dance and frolic at the festival, and will keep you cool." Of course, braids still appeared at many parties, but Brook says this more anime-inspired hairstyle is definitely having a moment.

"We’ve seen numerous musicians rock this look in the past — Gwen Stefani, Bjork and Miley Cyrus have all worn their version. These buns are a look any girl can pop on in a matter of minutes and never have to fuss with from show to show," says the hairstylist. She points out that varying iterations of chignons — topknots, mohawk buns and half buns, like Ferragni wore — have become popular on recent red carpets and catwalks (Marc Jacobs did a double bun mohawk last year that was a hit). The style also seems to channel Minnie Mouse.

Along with the fact that not much skill is needed to recreate this look, Brook says it's "great second-day hair, too! Maybe do your beachy mermaid hair the first day of the festival, and then day two your hair is going to have its own dirty texture that makes pulling it up easy." Secure the ponytails with elastics — she likes those by Braxx — before twisting or braiding them into buns, which can go many ways. (Perry’s were cotton-candy pink.) For weekend two, advises Brook, "Rock them tight and sleek, or go for that textured pom-pom look, depending on your overall vibe."
