Coachella Teases Rolling Stones Performance?
The popular Southern California music festival releases a photo strongly hinting that Mick, Keith and the boys will join the bill this spring.
Coachella looks to be hinting -- if not confirming -- that it will indeed get some satisfaction this year.
It seems the Rolling Stones have been tipped to join the bill at the SoCal desert music festival in April, if that's what a photo posted on the Coachella Facebook page is meant to symbolize -- or not. The image shows a big round rock (or is it a ball?) sitting in the open field at Empire Polo Club in Indio, where the event has been held for more than a decade. A message above the pic reads: “Happy New Years! We're excited, hope you are, too!”
In mid-December, a tour update was posted accidentally on the band’s mobile app that listed a Stones show April 12 in Indio. It also listed a Dec. 27 date in Huntington, N.Y., that never happened. Both dates were removed within hours, and Coachella promoter Goldenvoice had no comment.
Gathering the Stones would be a major coup for Coachella, given that the band very rarely plays festivals anywhere and hasn’t done one in the U.S. since Altamont in 1969. During that free, post-Woodstock festival in Northern California, a young fan was stabbed to death a few feet from the stage by a man who had been hired along with fellow Hells Angels to provide security for the show. The killer was acquitted on self-defense grounds after footage of the incident was shown in court, and the Stones distanced themselves from the incident.
The band is in the throes of its 50th anniversary celebration, which so far has included a handful of concerts and a two-song set at the Concert for Sandy Relief in New York, but no 2013 live dates have been announced. A Coachella gig might suggest that a tour is in the works.
To celebrate its golden anniversary, the Rolling Stones have issued their first new single in five years, “Doom and Gloom”; released a career-spanning greatest hits set, which also features another new song, “One More Shot”; and is featured in a pair of documentaries: Crossfire Hurricane, which premiered on HBO, and Charlie Is My Darling, a restored and expanded version on the 1965 film, which bowed at the New York Film Festival.
For a second year, the Coachella Music and Arts Festival will take place over consecutive weekends, with the same acts performing April 12-14 and 19-21. The lineup will be announced this month.
