Cogeco inks VOD deals for 'Glee,' 'Good Wife'
Move comes on heels of Netflix Canada launchTORONTO -- With Netflix Canada launched, Cogeco Cable has unveiled some timely VOD supply deals.
Cogeco on Tuesday announced an on-demand programming deal with Canadian broadcaster Canwest Global Communications Corp. for a slew of U.S. network series, including “Glee,” “Hawaii Five-O” and “The Good Wife” for its Ontario digital TV customers.
Netflix Canada, by offering Canadians unlimited access to movies and TV series for which it has the Canadian rights for $7.99 a month, now poses a competitive challenge to Cogeco and rival Canadian cable and telecom players.
Their response has been to bolster their own VOD offerings and lower their bandwidth caps for mobile data packages.
And with Netflix acquiring rights to French-language Canadian programming for an eventual run at the Quebec market, Cogeco also unveiled a separate VOD distribution deal with Radio-Canada.
Cogeco’s Quebec digital TV subscribers will now secure on-demand access to a range of popular Radio-Canada series that include “Et Dieu crier ... Laflaque,” “Les Parent, La galere” and "Les reshapes.”
