'The Color Purple: The Musical' and 'The Convert' Lead Ovation Award Nominations

The nominations for the 2011-2012 Ovation Awards were announced on Tuesday evening with productions of The Color Purple: The Musical, The Convert, and Forbidden Broadway: Greatest Hits, Volume 2 leading the pack.

Among theatre groups, Center Theatre Group’s collection of 29 nominations outpaced all others by a wide margin. Celebration Theatre and Musical Theatre West followed with 16 nominations each. Pulling up the rear are the Geffen Playhouse (11), Colony Theatre Company and Troubadour Theater Company (nine each).

Celebration Theatre’s revival of The Color Purple: The Musical leads the individual production nominations with 13. A close second is Kirk Douglas Theatre’s The Convert  (11) with Musical Theatre West’s Forbidden Broadway: Greatest Hits, Volume 2 (nine) coming in third. Rounding out the production nominations are Geffen Playhouse’s Good People, Black Dahlia Theatre’s Hey, Morgan! and Center Theatre Group’s revival of Waiting for Godot, which all received eight each.

Notable acting nominations include Jane Kaczmarek and Marylouise Burke in playwright David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People; Davis Gaines in Musical Theatre West’s Man Of La Mancha; and Alan Mandell, Barry McGovern and Hugo Armstrong in the revival of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot at the Mark Taper Forum.

The awards, which are organized by the L.A. Stage Alliance, honor theatre productions across the Los Angeles area for the season from Sept. 1, 2011, to Aug. 28, 2012. The awards ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 12 at the Los Angeles Theatre in Downtown L.A.
