Comcast Launching TV App for IPad for Digital Cable Subscribers
Hit TV shows and blockbuster movies to launch next month
NEW YORK - Comcast on Monday unveiled a TV app for the iPad that will enable its digital cable customers to watch TV shows and movies directly on the tablet in the coming weeks.
The app is part of the cable giant's version of the industry-wide TV Everywhere initiative that focuses on making TV content available on new platforms to provide more value to cable customers. Analysts have said such initiatives are particularly important amid continued talk about possible cord cutting, or consumers' discontinuation of pay TV services amid wider availability of TV content online.
“This Xfinity TV app is part of a much larger effort to reinvent the way consumers interact with their televisions by transforming the way they search, navigate, discover and share entertainment,” said Neil Smit, president of Comcast Cable. “The remote control hasn’t changed in years and this app will enable millions of consumers to instantly search thousands of live TV and On Demand choices and also watch the best content whenever and wherever they want.”
Initially, the app will mainly serve as a TV guide and remote control, plus it will allow users to program their DVRs from the iPad. Comcast will also offer hit shows and blockbuster movies from the top premium networks starting next month. Over the coming weeks and months, content and functionality will expand.
The first version of the app will be available on Apple's iTunes Store this week and is free to Comcast digital cable customers. The cable giant expects the app to also come to other devices over time.
