Comedy pilots get green light from Fox, CBS

Fox is heading to "Courtroom K," greenlighting a one-hour pilot from "House" executive producer Paul Attanasio.

Meanwhile, CBS has picked up "Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal," a comedy pilot starring stand-up comedian Birbiglia.

Attanasio penned "Courtroom" on spec and is executive producing the project, a darkly comedic courtroom drama in the vein of "House," which is set in a Milwaukee Superior Court and revolves around a judge, a prosecutor and a public defender. The project has been laid off at 20th Century Fox TV.

Attanasio has ties to Milwaukee — his brother, Mark, owns the Milwaukee Brewers.

"Courtroom" was written outside of the two-year first-look deal Attanasio and Katie Jacobs' Heel and Toe Films inked with Fox Broadcasting in the fall of 2005, following the success of the company-produced hit Fox drama "House."

CAA-repped Attanasio created NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Gideon's Crossing."

On the feature side, the Oscar-nominated writer has several projects in the works, including "The Fighter" and "East of Eden."

"Secret Public Journal," based on Birbiglia's weekly blog that chronicles his daily life, will star him as a stand-up comedian who lives with his girlfriend in Brooklyn and struggles in his efforts to be an adult, have a relationship, and do the right things.

Birbiglia and Andrew Secunda ("Love, Inc.") created the project, which was originally set at NBC Universal with Secunda as the writer. About 10 days ago, it moved to CBS Paramount Network TV, and after a rewrite by Secunda, CBS picked it up to pilot. Secunda will executive produce with Little Engine's Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo. Birbiglia will serve as producer.

Birbiglia who has toured the country for the past seven years, was one of the youngest comedians ever to appear on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman."

Birbiglia e-mails his "Secret Public Journal" entries to about 30,000 fans. The blog also is a feature on the nationally syndicated radio program "The Bob & Tom Show."

The project was packaged by UTA. Birbiglia, on a national tour with his stand-up show "Sleepwalk with Me," is managed by 3 Arts.
