Tom Cosgrove has been named COO and executive vp at Discovery Channel and the Science Channel, managing the overall network strategy for both.

He succeeds Doug Coblens, who now serves as executive vp business strategy and new media at Discovery Communications.

Cosgrove was senior vp and GM at the Science Channel, where he directed the day-to-day operations of the network, including planning and executing the programming and development, business and brand-enhancing strategies. He will continue as acting GM while the Science Channel looks for his successor.

Cosgrove reports to Jane Root, president and GM of both channels.

"Tom is a tremendous asset to our networks," she said. "He understands both the business needs and realities of our industry, while being completely plugged into the creative, development process. This will ensure balance and focus as we grow and innovate."

Before joining Discovery Networks, Cosgrove was GM at TV Guide Channel (now TV Guide Network), where he led direct day-to-day oversight of programming, production, marketing, business affairs, brand strategy, research and operations and played a key role in boosting the network's ratings.

He also has held senior management positions at ABC Family, Fox Family, Fox Kids, Fox Broadcasting and Leo Burnett, in addition to running his own consultancy.
