Critics' eyes on 'Cavemen'
EmptyAlthough inspired by the cavemen of Geico commercial fame, TV critics at the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour wondered if the new ABC comedy "Cavemen" isn't trading in negative stereotypes of blacks.
Exec producers were not surprised. "We knew we'd be under scrutiny," exec producer Will Speck said.
Added exec producer Mike Schiff: "Believe me, we spent a lot of time in the room talking about this. When you pick up an offensive stereotype, it's going to bump against any group. We want to show that all those stereotypes are incorrect."
The producers insisted that the cavemen were outsiders and did not represent any particular ethnic group. "I think the overall theme is one of acclimation," said Joe Lawson, who directed the Geico commercials.
