CTV orders Brent Butt's 'Hiccups' pilot

'Corner Gas' creator will also be showrunner

TORONTO -- Canadian broadcaster CTV on Thursday ordered a new pilot from "Corner Gas" creator and star Brent Butt.

Network execs hope the Vancouver-based comic's new series, titled "Hiccups," will repeat the success of "Gas," Canada's top-rated homegrown comedy now in its sixth and final season on CTV and Superstation WGN.

"We wanted to make sure Brent got right back to work," said Susanne Boyce, president of creative, content and channels at CTV.

"Hiccups" will star Butt's "Gas" co-star Nancy Robertson as a children's author with anger issues. Her "hiccups" -- alternate rage, depression and euphoric highs -- lead the successful author to recruit a life coach with no evident training or credentials.

Butt's Sparrow Media will shoot the project in Vancouver. Butt will share the executive producer credits with Laura Lightbown and David Storey, who will direct the pilot.

Sparrow Media recently brought veteran producer Lightbown ("Intelligence") over from rival Vancouver producer Haddock Entertainment to help develop its program slate.
