CTV Renews 'Masterchef Canada' for Second Season


TORONTO -- The love affair between Canadian broadcasters and format adaptations is growing.

CTV has renewed Masterchef Canada for a second season, ahead of Monday night's semifinal episode of the reality competition series based on the global Masterchef franchise from Shine America.

The show joins Amazing Race Canada, also performing well for CTV, and rival Global Television scoring with Big Brother Canada and Rogers Media set to launch a second season of The Bachelor Canada.

Before those local versions, Canadians watched only the U.S. productions of the popular reality competition series.

The renewal for Masterchef Canada, produced by Proper Television for CTV, follows the first season, averaging 1.7 million viewers to date on Monday nights.

Besides the audience appeal, Canadian broadcasters have jumped on the format bandwagon as barriers between programming, advertising and product integration steadily dissolve.

Kraft Canada is the main sponsor of Masterchef Canada, with its products used widely by cooking contestants during the first season.

Elsewhere, furniture retailer The Brick is a main sponsor for Big Brother Canada, and Kraft Canada also signed on for product integration in The Bachelor Canada as has Colgate-Palmolive Canada with its toothpaste and body-wash products, as well as Coty Inc.
