Current TV heading to Canada

CRTC OKs launch, with user-generated mandate

TORONTO -- Al Gore's Current TV has received a green light to go north with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has OK'd a Canadian launch for the user-generated TV news and current affairs service in the fall.

The CRTC ordered that 35% of the user-generated content on the proposed Current Canada service, a joint venture with Canada's public broadcaster, must be Canadian-driven.

The Canadia Current TV service will feature a Web site and a domestic digital channel.

And in line with Canadian ownership rules, the CBC will hold an 80% interest in the operating company Current Media Canada, with the U.S.-based Current TV retaining a 20% voting interest.
