"According to some people, the CIA plans to use cats as espionage agents," say "Lil Bub & Friendz" filmmakers Juliette Eisner and Andy Capper.

This story first appeared in the April 26 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

While film festivals often shine a spotlight on unknown artists, Tribeca’s decision to screen Juliette Eisner and Andy Capper’s feature-length Lil Bub & Friendz is a clever inversion of that classic model.

The documentary dives into the weird world of Internet cat videos, including those of the tiny, deformed and impossibly cute Lil Bub.

“According to some people, the CIA plans to use cats as espionage agents,” Eisner and Capper told THR in an e-mail, “but we think the cat obsession stems from a love of seeing something that isn’t scripted on the Internet.”
