More 'Hill,' 'Veronica,' 'Girls'

The CW has ordered additional episodes of the drama series "One Tree Hill" and "Veronica Mars," while E! Entertainment Television has greenlighted a third season of the unscripted series "The Girls Next Door."

The CW has picked up eight additional episodes of "Hill," bringing the total number to 21, while "Veronica" has been given an order for seven more episodes, bringing the total to 20. Both series had received 13-episode pickups in the spring as part of the CW's inaugural fall schedule.

"Hill" and "Veronica," both of which are from Warner Bros. Television, have shown improvement over their year-ago performances on WB Network and UPN, respectively.

"Hill," in its fourth season, is up 5% in the network's target demo of adults 18-34 and 4% among women 18-34 compared with last year. The series also has the best retention from its lead-in, "America's Next Top Model," than any other series that followed "Model" when it was on UPN. Season-to-date, "Hill" is averaging a 2.0 rating/5 share in 18-34 and a 2.8/7 in women 18-34.

"Veronica," which has "Gilmore Girls" as its lead-in, has grown 7% in adults 18-34 and 5% in women 18-34 vs. the comparable year-ago period. In its third season, the series is averaging a 1.6/4 in 18-34 and a 2.2/6 among females in the demo.

Meanwhile, E! has ordered 10 half-hour episodes for the third season of "Girls Next Door," set for a spring premiere. The series — produced by Prometheus Entertainment, Fox Television Studios and Alta Loma Entertainment — revolves around the lives of Hugh Hefner's three girlfriends, who live with him at the Playboy Mansion.

The second-season premiere of "Girls" on July 30 was the network's highest-rated original program telecast since 2003 among households (1.5 rating, 1.63 million total viewers) and marked E!'s best performance in four years in adults 18-34 (1.6).

This season is pacing nearly 30% ahead of last season among households as well as improving across all key demos, especially women 18-34, where it's up 60% to a 1.3 average rating. In addition, the show is attracting more than twice as many total viewers as E!'s total-day average (616,000 vs. 302,000).
