Lauper joins forces with writer Harvey Fierstein and director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell for a test run of their stage adaptation of the 2005 Miramax release.

The show features a book by Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles) and music and lyrics by Lauper. Direction and choreography are by Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde). Fierstein and Mitchell previously worked together on the Broadway smash Hairspray and on the 2005 revival of La Cage.
Produced by Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig, Kinky Boots will open at Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre in October and is expected to move to Broadway some time next season. Casting is to be announced.
The 2005 British feature film was directed by Julian Jarrold and scripted by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth. It starred Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joel Edgerton in the story of a man who, in order to save his late father’s shoe factory from bankruptcy, accepts help from a fabulous drag diva named Lola.

Fierstein also will be represented on Broadway this spring with another screen-to-stage adaptation, Disney’s Newsies.
That show features a book by Fierstein, music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman. It begins previews March 15 at the Nederlander Theatre, with official opening set for March 29.
