Celine Dion's Brother Dies Two Days After Her Husband
The singer's older brother passed away from cancer at the age of 59.
Just two days after Celine Dion's husband René Angélil died at age 73 from cancer, her older brother Daniel has also passed away.
Daniel, 59, had been battling brain, tongue and throat cancer, according to his sister, Claudette, according to TMZ.
A rep for Dion confirmed the news to Billboard. Daniel passed away early Saturday morning.
After Angélil passed away Thursday, a statement on Dion's website shared that her Jan. 16 and 17 concert dates at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas had been canceled. Her next scheduled show is Feb. 23.
Dion's website posted the following statement hours following her brother's passing:
Surrounded by his loving family, Daniel Dion, older brother to Celine Dion and eighth child of Thérèse and Adhémar Dion, passed away peacefully at the age of 59 years old.
After a long battle with cancer, Daniel leaves to mourn his mother Thérèse Tanguay-Dion; his daughters Valérie (Patrick Goyette) and Marie-Michelle; his grandchildren Matis and Laurianne (Valérie); his brothers and sisters Denise (Yvon Dodier), Clément (Denise Dumont), Claudette (Serge Gaudet), Liette (Guy Poirier), Michel (Danièle Corbeil), Louise (Pierre Tremblay), Jacques (Geneviève Garceau), Ghislaine (Jacques Talbot), Linda (Alain Sylvestre), Manon, Paul, Pauline (Marc Martel) and Céline; and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23rd, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-10:00 p.m. at Salon Charles Rajotte in Repentigny. Funeral services will be held at St-Simon-et-Jude Church in Charlemagne a few days thereafter.
His final days were spent in the care of the staff and volunteers at the palliative care centre Maison Adhémar-Dion. In lieu of flowers, donations to the center would be appreciated.
The family requests that in honor of their brother’s memory, their privacy be respected in this time of grief.
