David Bergstein Associates Find Work at Miramax (Exclusive)
The embattled financier has no role at the company, but his former colleagues have joined.
Although embattled film financier David Bergstein has no role at the new Miramax, some of his former colleagues have joined the revived company as it staffs up under CEO Mike Lang.
Ray J. Reyes, previously an in-house attorney at Bergstein's Pangea Media Group, has joined Miramax's legal team, although he is not head of that department. Miramax is still seeking a senior attorney as lead legal counsel, according to a source.
In addition, Huw Penallt Jones, who was a production executive at Bergstein's Capitol Films in London, has been retained as a consultant. Jones will be involved in the physical handling and delivery of movies from the 700-title Miramax library, according to the source. Jones was most recently CEO of De Lane Lea, a prominent London sound postproduction facility. Miramax is one of several places where he consults.
Bergstein, who is still fighting several lawsuits and an involuntary bankruptcy action stemming from his acquisition of Capitol Films and Thinkfilm and investments in a number of movies, helped broker the $663 million acquisition of Miramax from Disney by Filmyard Holdings, which closed in December. He has had an association in the movie business with Miramax investor Ronald Tutor, but Tutor told The Hollywood Reporter in advance of the sale that Bergstein would not be involved with the new company, and sources say he has not been invited to participate.
Lang declined to comment. He is expected to be in Berlin for the annual film festival and market later this month, where he will also be seeking additional deals and partnerships.
