David Bowie Pens Theme for Sky Series 'Last Panthers'
It's the music star's first song for a film or TV show in more than 20 years.
David Bowie has penned the theme song for upcoming diamond heist drama The Last Panthers, Sky's original series about the real-life Balkan gang of diamond thieves.
He wrote the song following a meeting with the director of the series, Johan Renck. It's the first time Bowie has written original music for the film or TV screen in 20 years, the company said.
“I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence but was presented with a god," said Renck. "His first response was precise, engaged and curious."
He added: "The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself — dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word). All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity. I still can’t fathom what actually happened…”
The six-part series has its world premiere at MIPCOM next month. It stars Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim and John Hurt. The series is based on the crimes of the Pink Panthers gang, known for its bold robberies and inventive ways of hiding its hauls.
The co-production of Sky Atlantic and CanalPlus was filmed in Marseille, Belgrade, Montenegro and London. It will air in the fall on CanalPlus in France and on Sky Atlantic in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria.
