David Katz to head up SportsFanLive.com

Ex-CBS and Yahoo exec's site to launch this week

Former CBS and Yahoo programming exec David Katz has resurfaced at the helm of his own Internet sports venture.

SportsFanLive.com launches this week in beta mode with Samsung on board as a premiere sponsor. The site aims to not only provide news in the sports world but also lure fans with social-networking features that allow for community and competition online.

"The existing sports sites have not evolved much over the past five years, but the world is a very different place right now," he said. "I saw a big opportunity to create a product that would satisfy the interests of these fans."

Katz led the sports and entertainment division at Yahoo under Lloyd Braun, former head of the Internet giant's media group. He stepped down in late 2006, one of the first in a stream of execs to depart Yahoo as the company's troubles mounted.

Before Yahoo, Katz spent eight years at CBS, where he played a pioneering role in the network's Internet efforts. As senior vp strategic planning and interactive ventures, he launched CBS.com and developed online components for many of the network's hits, including "Survivor" and "Big Brother."

SportsFanLive is financed by private investors who Katz declined to identify, but he noted they come from the "sports, media and advertising industries" as opposed to traditional venture-capital sources.
