David O. Russell, Mark Wahlberg on Next 'AFI Master Class' Special on TCM
The pair behind "The Fighter" will discuss their film collaborations during the special that premieres May 8.
Filmmaker David O. Russell and actor Mark Wahlberg will appear on the second edition of TCM Presents AFI’s Master Class — The Art of Collaboration, it was announced Thursday.
Paired on the two-time Oscar-winning The Fighter (2010) as well as the offbeat comedy I Heart Huckabees (2004) and the Iraq-set Three Kings (1999), Russell and Wahlberg will discuss their work together in front of an audience of AFI Fellows studying filmmaking at the AFI Conservatory in Hollywood for the TCM special, which premieres May 8 at 7 p.m. PT.
Wahlberg reveals watching such classics as The Roaring Twenties (1939) with his father, a Teamster who would come home each afternoon between routes. Russell talks about his taste for movies that show both the light and dark sides of family life, as in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). The pair also discuss the visual poetry of Francois Truffaut’s The 400 Blows (1959). The special will have clips from these films as well as memorable scenes from Russell and Wahlberg movies.
TCM will air The Roaring Twenties, starring James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Priscilla Lane, before the special, and follow it with another Cagney classic, the Lon Chaney biopic Man of a Thousand Faces (1957).
The cable network will close out the night with an encore presentation of the first Master Class special, featuring director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams, and a film that inspired them, Spartacus (1960).
