Hot Topic Launches Geek-Fandom Formal Wear Line
Dress up like your favorite DC Comics characters.
This probably isn’t what Prince had in mind when he sang “Batdance,” but we wonder what the late great Purple One would have thought of the styles in Hot Topic’s new DC-inspired formal wear line, Gotham Knights.
The new collection features both men's and women's special occasion wear suitable for a Dark Knight and his entourage. Tricksters Harley Quinn and the Joker are immortalized in a $99.90 flirty red-and-black harlequin print cutout dress, and $89.90 tuxedo coat and $44.90 dress shirt, respectively. While the Caped Crusader is honored with both men's and women's fashion options, thanks to a black blazer and vest with faux leather print and Bat symbol buttons ($79.90 and $59.90), a fitted black dress with a peaked bodice similar to the cape and cowl and an organza and tulle skirt with a bat print ($99.90).
DC characters Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy and Catwoman are also featured in this collection, which is a partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment. Styles range from XS to 3X and all dresses are available in plus sizes.
“Our customers have been asking for geek-fandom formal attire for quite some time, so we are really excited to debut this upscale collection,” Cindy Levitt, senior vp merchandising and marketing at Hot Topic, said in a statement. “At first glance, customers will see a beautiful gown or jacket — and those in-the-know will see so much more.”
The Gotham Knights collection, which launches in stores and online today, is Hot Topic’s first foray into formal wear but is by no means the only partnership that the City of Industry-based retailer has had with studios. Recently, it partnered with Disney on men's and women's wear inspired by costume designers David Crossman and Glyn Dillon’s creations for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
