De Mol buys back into Endemol
EmptyAMSTERDAM, The Netherlands -- Dutch media tycoon John de Mol has acquired a 5.2% stake in Endemol, the entertainment company he sold in 2000 to Spanish multinational Telefonica for €5.5 billion ($7.2 billion).
According to figures released Monday by the Dutch Authority for Financial Markets, De Mol's investment company, Cyrte, has built up an interest of more than 5% in Endemol -- the level at which shareholdings must be declared locally.
Last September, De Mol confirmed the possibility of buying back Endemol, together with the Italian media company Mediaset, who he claims approached him with the idea. Telefonica already has expressed a desire to sell its 75% stake in Endemol.
