Defy Media Acquires Viacom Gaming Websites
Defy Media is expanding its gaming-focused portfolio with the acquisition of Viacom's Addicting Games, GameTrailers and Shockwave websites. Viacom has taken a minority stake in Defy as part of the deal, which also includes a content marketing and syndication agreement between the two media firms.
The MTV and Nickelodeon owner, which joins existing investors ZelnickMedia, Lionsgate and ABS Capital, will have a representative on New York-based Defy's board. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Defy, created through the fall 2013 merger of Alloy Digital and Break Media, operates a portfolio of YouTube channels and video sites, including video game-centric Smosh Games, that reach 155 million monthly unique viewers.
"We formed Defy with the belief that our infrastructure and brands represent the strongest platform in digital media for reach and scale to the 13 to 34 year old audience and with Viacom's partnership we now have additional assets and support to fulfill that vision," said Defy CEO Matthew Diamond. "These outstanding brands represent meaningful and diverse revenue opportunities we aim to expand across our existing brand portfolio."
