Defy Media to Launch ScreenJunkies Subscription Service
The $4.99 a month service will feature scripted comedy series 'Interns of the F.I.E.L.D.'
The pop culture comedians of ScreenJunkies are launching their own subscription service.
ScreenJunkies Plus will roll out on Nov. 17 with an exclusive slate of new, original and live programming for $4.99 a month. Among the offerings is the first ScreenJunkies scripted series, a comedy called Interns of the F.I.E.L.D, about overworked, underpaid interns at the world's most elite secret super hero organization. The series, which premieres in December, features Jamie Kennedy, Jonathan Lipnicki and Casper Van Dien.
Popular ScreenJunkies series, including Honest Trailers and Movie Fights!, will continue to be free on the ScreenJunkies YouTube channel, but exclusive content will be available to SJ+ subscribers on the ScreenJunkies website and on mobile. The new programming for SJ+ subscribers includes film critic series Mundy Night Raw!, starring Dan Murrell and Nick Mundy; trivia series Movie Games with Jeremy Jahns; First & Worst with Chris Stuckmann; and Movie Fights! spinoff TV Fights!
Annual subscriptions to SJ+ are available for $59, and a $99 Founders Club subscription includes additional perks.
Defy Media-owned ScreenJunkies has more than 4.9 million subscribers and over 1 billion lifetime views. Defy president Keith Richman says the brand has grown rapidly in recent years, thanks in part to popular series like Honest Trailers. The Honest Trailer for Game of Thrones, for example, is the most-popular video on the ScreenJunkies YouTube channel with 26.9 million views. Richman notes that Movie Fights! has 500,000 weekly viewers, 200,000 of which watch the entirety of the 90-minute episodes. "We think there's a wide open opportunity to create a credible voice in this meta media world," he says.
SJ+ is one of several subscription streaming services from the YouTube community. YouTube, itself, launched $10 a month Red in October with new features and exclusive programming. "We're not blind to the fact that there are a lot of these services launching," Richman says. "It's a crowded marketplace, but we can be differentiated by both the programming and the fact that we've got this marketing vehicle." He adds that Defy is in talks with other services about bundling the SJ+ subscription.
