'Departed' rises to top of DVD sales chart
EmptyFresh off its big Oscar wins, Warner Home Video's "The Departed" returned to the top spot on the national DVD sales chart the week ending March 4, bumping Paramount/DreamWorks' "Flushed Away," the previous week's top seller, to No. 2.
Sony Pictures' "Stranger Than Fiction," the latest Will Ferrell comedy, could only muster a third-place debut on Nielsen VideoScan's First Alert chart, even though with a $40.4 million boxoffice gross it was the biggest new theatrical feature to come out on DVD.
"Stranger Than Fiction" did snag a first-place bow on Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week, generating an estimated $6.8 million in revenue. "The Departed" held fast at No. 2, earning an additional $6.6 million to bring its total rental earnings, after three weeks, to $25 million, or nearly 20% of its $129.4 theatrical take.
New Line's "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" bowed at No. 6 on First Alert and No. 10 on the rental chart, while 20th Century Fox's "A Good Year," the notorious box office bust from director Ridley Scott, debuted at No. 8 on both the DVD sales and rental charts. In rental stores, "Tenacious D" generated $2.7 million while "A Good Year" earned $2.9 million, or 38% of its meager $7.5 million box office haul.
Two direct-to-video releases also made it into First Alert their first week in stores: Universal's "Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers" (No. 14) and Lionsgate's "Bratz Fashion Pixiez" (No. 16).
