'Despicable Me 2' Tops Blu-ray, DVD Charts for Third Week
Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Despicable Me 2 continued its impressive holiday run the week ended Dec. 29, landing atop both national disc sales charts for a third consecutive week.
Fast & Furious 6, also from Universal, was No. 2 for the third week on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined sales, and Nielsen's dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
The only new release in the top 20 was Sony Pictures' Insidious Chapter 2, which debuted at No. 9 on both charts.
Despicable Me 2 is the year’s No. 2 movie, behind Iron Man 3, in domestic box office earnings ($367.4 million) and has amassed a whopping $918 million worldwide. When it bowed on disc in early December it sold an estimated 4.5 million discs, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined, within its first week in stores.
Rounding out the top five on the First Alert sales chart were Warner’s Man of Steel, which rose back up to No. 3 from No. 5 the previous week; 20th Century Fox’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, No. 4 for the second consecutive week; and Walt Disney’s The Lone Ranger, which slipped to No. 5 after bowing at No. 3 the prior week.
On the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, it was also Man of Steel at No. 3 and Percy Jackson at No. 4, while the No. 5 spot went to Sony Pictures’ Elysium, up a notch from its No. 6 debut the previous week.
Despicable Me 2 generated 42 percent of its sales during the week from Blu-ray Disc, compared to 46 percent for Fast & Furious 6, 52 percent for Man of Steel, 45 percent for Percy Jackson, 43 percent for The Lone Ranger and 53 percent for Elysium.
On Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week, Warner's We're the Millers, Sony Pictures' Elysium and Universal's 2 Guns repeated in the top three spots. Insidious Chapter 2 debuted as the No. 4 rental, while Walt Disney's The Lone Ranger rode in at No. 5 after a week-long Redbox delay.
