Digest: Cannes saddles up
EmptyParamount Home Entertainment International is teaming with Batjac Prods. for a Festival de Cannes showing of John Wayne's 1953 classic "Hondo," newly restored in digital 3-D. The screening commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Duke's birth and kicks off the international DVD launch of several of Wayne's best-known films, including "The High and the Mighty," "Island in the Sky" and "McLintock!" "The 3-D screening of 'Hondo' at Cannes is one of those one-of-a-kind events my late father-in-law would have loved," said Gretchen Wayne, president and owner of Batjac.
Hit me, again
Now that Britney Spears is performing onstage again, the race to capitalize on the tarnished pop diva's comeback is on. First out of the gate: Koch Entertainment, which is hastily re-promoting the DVD of "Britney Baby One More Time," a farcical comedy about a gay Britney Spears impersonator, originally released in February 2004.
A dozen student films from George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis and other directors will be released Aug. 21 on DVD by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. "Reel Talent: First Films by Legendary Directors" features such rarely seen works as Lucas' "Freiheit," about a young man who runs from an unseen pursuer, and Zemeckis' "The Lift," about an elevator in an old apartment building that begins to show a mind of its own. The 12 films all come from the USC's School of Cinematic Arts.
HBO Video is preparing a 10th anniversary "signature edition" of "Todd MacFarlane's Spawn: The Animated Collection" for a July 24 DVD release. The two-disc set includes 18 episodes, each of them digitally remastered with color enhancement and Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio.
