NL likes Liberato

New Line Home Entertainment has signed an agreement on a second picture option for young actress Liana Liberato, who recently wrapped production on the DVD unit's adaptation of Danielle Steel's "Safe Harbour," opposite Melissa Gilbert. The 11-year-old starred in Michael Landon Jr.'s first feature film, "The Last Sin Eater," from Fox Faith Films.

70,000 and slowing

The number of DVD titles that have been released into the market since the format's inception in 1997 passed the 70,000 mark this month, according to industry newsletter the DVD Release Report, but the pace is definitely slowing. As of Tuesday, 2,188 titles had been released this year, compared with 3,086 in the same period in 2005.

Gaiam on the tube

Fitness video supplier Gaiam is jumping into television this month with the launch of a dedicated Gaiam fitness channel on cable network Exercise TV. Among the titles to be showcased are Rodney Yee's "Yoga Conditioning for Athletes" and "Dancer's Body Workout," with Patricia Moreno.

The indie Mill

Budget label Mill Creek Entertainment is going highbrow. The company has partnered with Breakthrough Distribution to launch "Reel Indies," a line of DVDs that will showcase features and documentaries from independent filmmakers. The line launches April 24 with eight DVDs; four more titles are planned each month from June-September.
