Rebecca Hall and Laura Linney also star in Oren Moverman's adaptation of Herman Koch's bestseller.

"Families will do anything to protect each other," says Steve Coogan in the trailer for The Dinner.

The psychological thriller sees Richard Gere playing an ambitious politician in the middle of a campaign, and Coogan as his estranged, troubled brother. The two siblings and their wives (played by Rebecca Hall and Laura Linney) meet to discuss what to do about their children, who have just secretly committed a violent crime that has shocked the country.

The moral dilemma pushes Gere to ask, "What will he become if he gets away with this?"

Oren Moverman wrote and directed the adaptation of Herman Koch's bestselling novel. Adepero Oduye, Michael Chernus and Chloe Sevigny are also featured in the cast.

The Orchard will release The Dinner in theaters May 5.
