Director Danny Boyle: Summer Olympics Opener Partly Inspired by 'Frankenstein'

LONDON - In preparing the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics that will take place here, director Danny Boyle found some inspiration in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, he told Vogue, The Huffington Post reported.

Organizers said previously that the £27 million ($42.3 million) opening event would be based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest.

But the late July ceremony, which the Slumdog Millionaire director is overseeing, will also include "quite a lot of Frankenstein," he said. "I mean, we don't reanimate dead creatures, but we did use Frankenstein as a dry run for a lot of ideas for this."

Added the Oscar winner: "Stirring emotion is hard in a stadium." If Boyle brings to life his creative vision, the stadium will look "more like a cauldron, with all the people hovering over and around you," he explained.

Boyle directed a Frankenstein production for the Royal National Theatre last year. It will be shown in U.S. movie theaters next month.

The music for the Olympics opening ceremony is being written by British band Underworld, which also wrote the score for the Frankenstein theater production.
