Directors Guild nominates doc filmmakers
'Beaches of Agenes,' 'Anvil!' helmers among nomineesVeteran filmmaker Agnes Varda is among the six directors nominated for the Directors Guild of America's best documentary award.
Varda scored a nom for her autobiographical film, "The Beaches of Agnes." Her fellow nominees are Sacha Gervasi for "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," a look at a Canadian heavy-metal band; Mai Iskander for "Garbage Dreams," a study of Egyptian trash collectors: Robert Kenner for "Food, Inc.," which examines the U.S. agribusiness; Louie Psihoyos for "The Cove," which explores the exploitation of dolphins; and Geoffrey Smith for "The English Surgeon," who focuses on an English neurosurgeon working in Ukraine.
All are first-time nominees for the award.
The winners will be announced at the 62nd annual DGA Awards Dinner on Jan. 30 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
