'Dirty' deed done: Weinstein Co. has dance spoof spec
The Weinstein Co. has won the contest for "Dirty Step Stomp," a spec script by Steve Basilone and Annie Mebane that spoofs dance movies. Chris Bender, Mason Novick, JC Spink will serve as producers.
The movie will spoof such recent films as "Stomp the Yard," "Step Up" and "Save the Last Dance" as well as the 1980s classics "Footloose" and "Dirty Dancing."
The idea of the movie originated in one of Benderspink's weekly idea meetings, where everyone from the company is encouraged to come forward with ideas and opinions pertaining to articles, books, specs, pitches and the like. A month ago, TV coordinator Amber DeFrancis threw out the idea of a dance spoof movie, noting that the genre was ripe for a takedown. Andrew Mallett, the assistant to Benderspink partner Jill McElroy, suggested that a couple of his writer friends could pen the spec. Over the next couple of weeks, DeFrancis and Mallett and writers Basilone and Mebane developed the script under Novick's guidance.
On Wednesday, after spoof movie "Epic Movie" debuted at the top of the boxoffice with a $18.6 million take, Spink sent out the script, inducing a bidding war.
Basilone and Mebane are repped by UTA and Odenkirk Talent.
Benderspink is in postproduction on the horror thriller "Killers," previously known as "The Last Resort," for Element/ Lionsgate. It has "Torrente" set up at New Line and "The Guy Not Taken" at DreamWorks.
Novick, an independent producer at Benderspink, is in production on Fox Searchlight's "Juno," being directed by Jason Reitman.
