Discovery Networks International Hires New Creative Boss


LONDON - Discovery Networks has hired former Channel 4 head Julian Bellamy to the post of creative director and head of production and development for DNI, reporting to Luis Silberwasser, evp and chief content officer of the division.

Bellamy, who left Channel 4 a year ago after BBC exec Jay Hunt was brought in to head the network's television operations, will be charged with boosting the profile of Discovery programming and rolling out new creative ideas across Discovery's global networks.

On his watch Channel 4 delivered the U.K. version of Undercover Boss as well as Inside Nature's Giants and One Born Every Minute. Prior to Channel 4 he ran BBC3, where he was involved in the creation of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.

Picked for his strong relationships with independent producers as well as clear creative credentials, Bellamy - a well-liked and affable executive who many thought should have had the top TV job at Channel 4 - now has the entirety of Discovery's commissioning and production base globally outside the U.S. reporting to him.

Based in London, he will oversee production and development across DNI's portfolio of over 100 networks, taking up the job June 1.
