Discovery Communications on Monday announced two executive appointments for its Planet Green channel, which is launching in first-quarter 2008

Annie Howell has been named senior vp communications, public affairs and talent management, while Dan Russell has been named vp programming of the network, which is dedicated to environmentally friendly programming.

"Annie and Dan are two of the best in the business," said Planet Green president and GM Eileen O'Neill, to whom Howell and Russell will report.

In her new post, Howell will oversee all communications strategies and media outreach for the network, including the development of partnership strategies and publicity campaigns for programming and multiplatform assets. She also will be responsible for talent management.

Howell joined Discovery in 1999, most recently serving as senior vp communications, in Discovery Communications' U.S. Networks division.

Russell will direct and manage the programming activities, including shared acquisitions and program planning, for Planet Green's linear and new-media platforms. He also will have oversight of international initiatives and work on program development partnerships and new business opportunities.

Russell, a 19-year Discovery veteran, most recently was vp programming at Discovery Health Channel and was responsible for researching, developing and designing the network's core upfront and quarterly programming strategies.

Howell and Russell are based at Discovery's global headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.

Discovery Home Channel is being rebranded as Planet Green early next year.
