Discovery vets get COO stripes

Discovery Communications veterans Doug Coblens and Lori McFarling have been named to newly created COO posts at the company.

Coblens has been named COO at Discovery Channel and the Science Channel, reporting to president and GM Jane Root. McFarling has been named COO at Animal Planet and Discovery Kids Media, reporting to president and GM Marjorie Kaplan.

Created as part of Discovery's recent restructure, the COOs will manage the overall network business strategy as the general managers assume increased creative responsibilities for their brands. In their new roles, Coblens and McFarling will oversee all business operations and administration, coordinate activities across the company's business units and direct the strategy for brand extension, new media and product development for their properties.

They also will partner with the Discovery's international leadership team to support the worldwide growth of their respective brands across all platforms.

Coblens joined Discovery in 1998 as vp legal affairs. He most recently was executive vp legal and business affairs. McFarling, who joined the company in 1988 as account manager, Eastern region, most recently was senior vp distribution and marketing strategy.
