DishOnline Adding HBO, Cinemax Content Not Available on Netflix

DishOnline, a one-year-old service that serves up TV shows and movies online to Dish subscribers, has added premium content from HBO and Cinemax that is not available at Netflix.

Dish, HBO and Cinemax will issue a news release Thursday morning announcing their new relationship. In it, Dave Shull, senior vp programming for Dish, lists a bunch of content, “none of which is available through Netflix’s online service.”

Netflix has been trying to land a deal for streaming HBO content, but HBO has resisted.

Most of the content at DishOnline.com is available to Dish customers only, but some of it can be viewed by anyone with a broadband Internet connection.

The HBO-Cinemax deal to be announced Thursday adds 1,800 TV and movie titles to DishOnline, which already had 150,000 pieces of content, though much of that was merely clips.

The HBO and Cinemax content is available at DishoOnline.com only to Dish customers who also subscribe to HBO and Cinemax.

DishOnline lets customers watch content instantly or download it to their Dish DVRs.

The DishOnline.com website was already showing off the new content Wednesday evening, touting episodes of True Blood, The Sopranos and Entourage.

Other networks that have partnered with DishOnline include AMC, MTV, HGTV, Starz, TNT, Nickelodeon and Sony Movie Channel.

And advertised at the site as “free for everyone” are shows from ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News Channel, CNBC, CMT and the CW as well as movies from 20th Century Fox, MGM and Lionsgate.
