Disney going mobile in Japan

TOKYO -- Walt Disney's Japan arm said Monday that it has submitted an application with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to provide mobile services, in collaboration with Softbank Mobile Corp., under the brand name Disney Mobile.

The two companies plan to take advantage of each other's skills in developing handsets, services, mobile content, marketing and service delivery activities.

"As a result of our success in mobile content in Japan, we believe there is a strong market for a more immersive Disney mobile experience that includes a phone and suite of services and content," Walt Disney Japan president Paul Candland said.

Further details of the new service are to be released at a later date.

The Walt Disney Co. has been in Japan since 1959, and its film distribution division earned a record ¥25.5 billion ($231 million) in boxoffice revenue in 2006.
