The exec ran the global campaigns for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Maleficent'
Asad Ayaz has been appointed executive vice president, marketing, at Walt Disney Studios.
Ayaz is the marketing brand lead for theatrical releases from Disney Live Action, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm, and his promotion comes as the studio enjoys impressive success at the box office.
He'll continue to report to Disney president of worldwide marketing Ricky Strauss and is now working on campaigns for many of company's upcoming tentpoles, including Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode VII, and Disney’s Cinderella, Tomorrowland, and The Jungle Book.
Ayaz oversaw the campaigns for Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, which set records with their respective openings of $95 million and $94 million. He also spearheaded the campaign for Disney’s Maleficent, which opened to $69.4 million.
In fact, the three films are among the top five grossers domestically, while Maleficent and Winter Soldier both earned north of $700 million worldwide. Guardians, meanwhile, is the highest grossing film of the year so far in North America, and is closing in on $600 million worldwide.
Ayaz was responsible for driving the strategy, development and execution of the marketing campaigns for the films on a global basis.
The 10-year vet, who appeared on THR's Next Gen list in 2012, also led the global campaigns for 2012’s The Avengers (the movie holds the record for highest domestic opening weekend of all time with $207.4 million) and Iron Man 3, both of which went on to gross over a billion dollars and are in the top 10 of the highest grossing films of all time.
Additionally, he worked on campaigns for Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful and Saving Mr. Banks and Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World.
