Distributors pick up winning Cannes films
Strand nabs 'Leap Year'; two acquire 'Screaming Man'Stateside distributors continue to pick up winning films from last month's Festival de Cannes.
The latest acquisitions see Strand Releasing nabbing U.S. rights to Michael Rowe's "Leap Year," which won the Camera d'Or, and Film Movement and Soda Pictures picking up Mahamat-Saleh Haroun's "A Screaming Man," which took home the Jury Prize.
Australian director Rowe earned the Camera d'Or, given to the best first film in the Official Selection, for his tale of a woman living in Mexico City who embarks on a sado-masochistic affair.
Strand, which acquired "Leap" from Pyramide International, will release it early next year.
Film Movement will release "Screaming" early next year in the U.S., and Soda will handle its rollout in the U.K. and Ireland.
Written and directed by Haroun, the French- and Arabic-language film -- which will be distributed theatrically, followed by a cable VOD run -- centers on a former swimming champ who gives up his job as a hotel pool attendant in Chad to his son while his country is in the midst of civil war.
