'Doctor Who' Christmas Special to Address Future of Sidekick

Fan have speculated that Peter Capaldi may lose Jenna Coleman as his partner in the new year

Speculation surrounding Doctor Who’s companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, looks likely to continue right up until the traditional Christmas special of the BBC sci-fi hit show next month.

The actress has long been rumored to be departing the show and not feature in the new season next year. Showrunner Steven Moffat told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month that while Peter Capaldi was aboard as the lead for next season, she had yet to sign up.

Responding to U.K. tabloid rumors that emerged on Friday that the 28-year-old actress may have changed her mind and may return for at least part of next season, the BBC said that the festive special, due to air on BBC America on Christmas Day, will address her fate.

"Viewers will have to watch the Christmas episode to find out" the character's future, a spokesperson told U.K. magazine Radio Times.
