The Thomas Jane-starring space opera is shooting in Toronto

Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar and Wes Chatham have joined the cast of Syfy's The Expanse as it starts shooting in Toronto.

The NBCUniversal-owned channel and Alcon TV's Leviathan Wakes adaptation has also added Florence Faivre, Jonathan Banks, Paulo Costanzo and Jay Hernandez to the cast. Tipper is to play Naomi Nagata, a native of The Belt, Anvar will be retired Martian Navy pilot Alex Kamal and Chatham is Amos, an Earth-born engineer.

Faivre, also boarding the series as a series regular, will play Juliette Andromeda Mao. Banks, Costanzo and Hernandez will guest-star in the space drama.

The thriller, set 200 years in the future, follows the case of a missing young woman who brings Det. Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), a member of a corporate police force on Ceres Station, and Earther James Holden (Steven Strait), a rogue captain, together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

Shohreh Aghdashloo was also earlier announced to play Chrisjen Avasarala, a member of a prominent political family. The 10-episode first season, set to bow on Syfy in 2015, has Terry McDonough (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) directing the first two episodes.

The screenwriting duo of Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby wrote the pilot and are showrunners for The Expanse alongside fellow executive producer Naren Shankar. The series is financed and produced by Alcon Television Group, a division of Alcon Entertainment.

Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson also have executive producer credits, as does president of Alcon Television Sharon Hall. Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Ben-Hur, Graceland) and Jason Brown, who brought the project to Fergus and Ostby, are executive producers on the series for The Sean Daniel Company.

Alcon Television executive Ben Roberts will serve as co-producer.
