Donald Trump on Miss Universe Mistake: Colombia, Philippines Contestants Should Be Co-Winners
The former owner of the pageant said the new owners have a call scheduled with him today.
Donald Trump called into NBC's Today show on Monday to talk about Steve Harvey's Miss Universe mistake, in which the pageant host at first crowned Miss Colombia as the winner when Miss Philippines had actually won the title.
"Steve Harvey is a great guy," said Trump, saying he liked the way Harvey handled his mistake. Trump is the former owner of the Miss Universe Organization, which presents the beauty pageant. "It certainly was a terrible error, terrible for the young woman from Colombia." He added, "Things happen, it's live television."
He said the new owners "already have a call scheduled" with him today and he thinks they'll be asking for Trump's advice. "I think I'd make them a co-winner," said Trump. He said he would recommend that Miss Universe televise a new "beautiful ceremony" and make Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines co-winners. "It would be very cool," Trump added.
"What happened to the girl from Colombia is devastating," said Trump. "To give it to her for a couple minutes and then take it away."
Last night, Trump promoted the show, saying "My friend Ari Emanuel of IMG bought the Miss Universe pageants from me and they are on tonight on Fox." Later, after Harvey's mistake, Trump said this never would have happened on his watch.
Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant. I sold it 6 months ago for a record price. This would never have happened!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 21, 2015
