'Doves' flys with six Qantas noms
EmptyWELLINGTON, New Zealand -- A Kiwi political thriller that was pulled from primetime because of low ratings has been nominated for six Qantas Television Awards, including best New Zealand drama.
The six-part ScreenWorks production, "Doves of War," which TV3 relegated to late-night midway through its run, also was nominated for best actor in a TV drama (Scott Wills) and best actress in a TV drama (Kate Atkinson).
Dominating this year's nominations is the Gibson Group's "The Insiders Guide to Love ...," which was recognized in 10 categories, including best New Zealand drama.
The most popular of this year's drama contenders, South Pacific Pictures' "Outrageous Fortune," which won last year's inaugural award, received four nominations.
Vying for best New Zealand comedy are "Bro'Town," "The Unauthorized History of New Zealand" and "Pulp Sport."
Pubcaster TV One dominated the news and current affairs categories with 19 nominations, while CanWest-run TV3 received nine.
When the finalists were announced Tuesday, NZ Television Broadcasters Council chair Brent Impey said the 10% rise in awards entries was "a sign of the strength of the New Zealand television industry, and the fact that viewers love New Zealand content."
The 2006 Qantas Television Awards will be presented Nov. 18 in Auckland.
