Drafthouse Acquires Karyn Kusama Thriller 'The Invitation'
A movie about a Hollywood dinner party from hell had buzz at South by Southwest.
The Invitation, a thriller about a Hollywood dinner party gone terribly wrong, has been acquired by Drafthouse Films.
The film, from Girlfight director Karyn Kusama, stars Logan Marshall-Green as a man attending a mysterious get-together at the home of his ex-wife (Tammy Blanchard) and her new husband (Game of Thrones' Michiel Huisman).
The guests are then introduced to a strange and menacing figure, played by John Carroll Lynch — the same actor who played the terrifying Twisty the Clown in American Horror Story: Freak Show.
The film, which kicked off the Midnighters section of South by Southwest last month, received positive word of mouth around the festival, with multiple critics calling it a return to form for Kusama, following the disappointment of 2009's Jennifer's Body.
"The Invitation has remained under our skin since we first saw it and we’re honored that we’ll be able to share with audiences everywhere,” Drafthouse COO James Emanuel Shapiro said in a statement.
The admiration goes both ways. Says Kusama, "We love what they do. I’m excited by their passionate enthusiasm for the film and truly honored to be working with them."
The deal, which secures Drafthouse worldwide rights to The Invitation, was negotiated by ICM Partners and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers, and Shapiro for Drafthouse Films. A release plan has not yet been decided.
