Drake, The Weeknd Top Nominees for MuchMusic Video Awards
Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes also lead the field for next month's Canadian TV block party, to be hosted by Gigi Hadid on June 19.
The nominees for the MuchMusic Video Awards were announced Wednesday, and Drake and singer-songwriter Alessia Cara scored a leading seven nominations each.
Organizers also said Grammy Award winner The Weeknd and Vine pop star Shawn Mendes each grabbed six nominations. Canadian hit maker The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Drake also top the nominees list for the Billboard Music Awards.
At the MuchMusic awards, Drake and The Weeknd will face off in the best hip-hop video competition, and also against Bieber, Cara and Mendes in the most buzzworthy Canadian artist category. And the best Canadian single of the year competition will pit Cara's "Here," Coleman Hell's "2 Heads" and Bieber's "Sorry" against Mendes' "Stitches" and The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face."
The best international artist of the year competition includes nominations for Adele, Rihanna, Kanye West, Nick Jonas, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift. The MMVAs will be broadcast live in 4K as they air on Canada's Much and CTV channels, and stream on Much.com.
The event also will be a Canadian coming-out party for U.S.-based iHeartRadio, formerly known as Clear Channel, which recently signed an exclusive pact with Canadian broadcaster Bell Media to launch its brand in Canada by the summer.
Additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.
