Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Shares First Look at 'Fast and Furious 8' Character
Hobbs appears to be going dark in the latest installment of the franchise, currently filming.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is breaking more news via his social media accounts, revealing a first look at his Fast and Furious character Luke Hobbs' darker look for the upcoming eighth film in the car-racing series.
The black-and-white photo, which Johnson posted Saturday to his Instagram and Facebook accounts, shows Hobbs sporting a pointy goatee and a leather vest.
Johnson captioned the image with an idea of what to expect from the character in the latest Fast and Furious installment.
“When you strip a man of all he has. All that’s important to him," he wrote. "You force him to return to his roots and sometimes that’s a very dangerous and twisted place.”
Johnson went on to explain that he wanted to introduce a "new version of Hobbs" with the new movie, hoping that would lead to an interesting future, like a possible spinoff, which Johnson has previously said he's interested in doing.
"If I was going to return for another Fast & Furious I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their blood pumping to see a new version of Hobbs and his ‘Daddy’s gotta go to work’ mentality and set the table in a cool way for where the character goes in the future," Johnson wrote. "Maybe it’s a spinoff movie. Maybe it’s more #FF movies. Or hell maybe Hobbs just gets on his motorcycle and rides off into the sunset never to be seen again.”
Johnson joined the Fast and Furious franchise in Fast Five as federal agent Luke Hobbs and has since appeared in subsequent films Fast and Furious 6 and Furious 7.
Fast 8, which is set to hit theaters on April 14, 2017, is currently filming, with part of the movie shooting on location in Cuba, the first Hollywood studio film to do so since the embargo was set in the 1960s. F. Gary Gray is directing. Johnson is part of a cast that includes fellow returning actors Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Kurt Russell, with Scott Eastwood and Charlize Theron joining the ensemble. Theron plays the villain Cipher. On Friday, the franchise posted a video of the first day on set to its Twitter account, offering a brief glimpse of Johnson's Hobbs.
Johnson will next be seen starring alongside Kevin Hart in Warner Bros.' Central Intelligence, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, which is set to hit theaters June 17.
EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: #HOBBS #F8 When you strip a man of all he has. All that's important to him. You force him to return to his roots.. and sometimes that's a very dangerous and twisted place. If I was going to return for another FAST & FURIOUS I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their blood pumping to see a new version of Hobbs and his "Daddy's gotta go to work" mentality and set the table in a cool way for where the character goes in the future. Maybe it's a spinoff movie. Maybe it's more #FF movies. Or hell maybe Hobbs just gets on his motorcycle and rides off into the sunset never to be seen again. Either way, I've had a solid first week of shooting, good to be back with the ohana, good to work again w/ my bud and director F. Gary Gray and our home studio of UNIVERSAL, as always have been the best partners to me and my #SevenBucksProds team. Most importantly... you guys around the world will really dig this new version of the role, 'cause as we always say, disrupters dent the universe. #Hobbs #TwistedRoots #1Disrupter #1Savage #F8
