Eastern Europe's AXN finds 'Sanctuary'
Purchases 13 hourlong episodes of sci-fi seriesTORONTO -- Canadian distributor Tricon Films & Television has sold the sci-fi series "Sanctuary" to entertainment channel AXN for Eastern Europe, it was announced Monday.
Sony Pictures Television International's AXN bought 13 one-hours of "Sanctuary" for markets that include Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
Sanctuary, which stars Amanda Tapping ("Stargate SG-1") and Robin Dunne ("Dawson's Creek") and was shot in Vancouver by Sanctuary 1 Prods., has already been picked up by the U.S.-based Sci Fi Channel, by the Movie Network and Movie Central in Canada, and ITV in Britain.
In other Canadian MIPCOM news, rival distributor Decode Enterprises said it sold the CBC preschool series Animal Mechanicals (40x11) to the Disney Channels in the U.K. and Asia, Discovery Latin America, Romania's HOP, EBS in Korea, Radio-Canada and the Al-Jazeera Children Channel.
And Toronto producer Insight Prods. confirmed plans to partner with Ripley Entertainment to make a new version of the "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" TV franchise.
The weekly one hour series, "Ripley's Believe It or Not! Shockingly True Stories," will feature bureaus in seven countries worldwide reporting on true-life discoveries, with wireless, text and broadband extensions.
WMA will represent the new Ripley's TV series in the U.S. market.
