State measure SB 716— which would make using the training device illegal in California — is set for its first committee hearing in Sacramento on Tuesday.

More than 50 entertainment industry notables have announced their support for a California bill that would ban the use of the so-called bullhooks often used to train elephants.

The measure—SB 716—written by Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) and backed by The Humane Society of the United States, goes up for its first hearing Tuesday in Sacramento before the Assembly’s Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Committee.

The petition sent to lawmakers on the bill’s behalf reads in part, “There is no excuse for treating elephants cruelly for entertainment’s sake. Today, zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and bona fide sanctuaries in California use positive reinforcement and food rewards to train elephants, while providing excellent care. None of them use the bullhook.”

Among the endorsement’s entertainment industry signators are: Lee Aronsohn, Bob Barker, Kim Basinger, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Jason Biggs, Leslie Bohem, Henri Bollinger, Brannon Braga, Scott Budnick, Scott Z. Burns, George Davis, Esq., Laney Fichera, Jorja Fox, Sarah Goldfinger, Mitchell Gossett, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Anjelica Huston, Frank John Hughes, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Erik Jendresen, Jesse V.
