LA CORUNA, Spain -- The online version of Spanish daily El Pais on Saturday became the first newspaper here to offer a free downloadable feature film, offering its readers Manuel Gutierrez Aragon's 2002 "Don Quixote" via Filmotech.com.

The Filmotech Web site is backed by Spain's Audiovisual Producers' Rights Management entity EGEDA.

"Searching for viable alternatives for premium-content digital authorized distribution, Filmotech.com makes possible that El Pais becomes the first online newspaper to provide a full-length commercial movie safely viewable and downloadable from every country in the world," Filmotech said.

The Spanish site, which includes films from all over the world and is steadily increasing its partnerships, said the move looked to ensure the authorized digital circulation of films and other premium audiovisual content.

The site includes features, documentaries and animation and charges 1 euro ($1.50) for rentals and 5.80 euros ($8.50) for the sale of its catalog titles, which include such hits as Alejandro Amenabar's "The Others" or "The Sea Inside" and Julio Medem's "Sex and Lucia" or classics including Luis Garcia Berlanga's "Welcome Mr. Marshall."
