Elisabeth Murdoch Divorcing PR Executive Matthew Freud
Rupert Murdoch's daughter and the PR firm head have been married for 13 years and have two children
Television executive and Rupert Murdoch daughter Elisabeth Murdoch is ending her marriage to top PR executive Matthew Freud, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Sources say Murdoch and the head of Freud Communications will file for divorce as early as next week. The couple wed in 2001 and have two children, ages 7 and 13.
A source close to the Murdoch family says Elisabeth has father Rupert's full support. Rupert recently went through a divorce of his own, reaching a settlement with Wendi Deng in November 2013.
Elisabeth and Freud reportedly had distanced themselves from Rupert during the 2011 phone-hacking scandal that led to the News of the World shuttering. The U.K.'s Daily Mail, which first reported the divorce, claims friction between Rupert and Freud was a factor in the divorce.
Freud, great-grandson of Sigmund Freud, has had several outbursts at public events over the years, including a physical altercation with Hugh Grant in 2010. Freud is a high-profile and somewhat controversial figure in the U.K., with close ties to Tony Blair and several top politicians. Freud's rep declined to comment on this story.
The divorce news comes just days after Elisabeth revealed she will step down as Shine Group non-executive chair when its merger with Endemol and Core Media is complete. She has held the chair for two years, following her father's News Corp. paying $673 million for the company in 2011. Shine produces The Biggest Loser and MasterChef.
According to sources, Elisabeth plans to focus on her investments after leaving Shine and does not plan to eventually succeed Rupert as the 21st Century Fox and News Corp chair. Shine and Freud representatives declined to comment on the divorce.
