Emma Stone cast in new Spider-Man film
'Easy A' star will play Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew GarfieldEmma Stone has been cast as the female lead in Columbia and Marvel’s new Spider-Man movie.
Despite speculation that the red-headed star of “Easy A” and “Zombieland” would play red-headed Spider-Man love interest Mary Jane Watson, she instead is playing blond-haired tragic love interest Gwen Stacy.
Stone will star opposite Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in the franchise reboot being directed by Marc Webb. The movie begins production in December and will be released in 3D nationwide July 3, 2012.
“The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice,” Webb said. “At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles but also make them their own.
The casting process reportedly involved looking for actresses for both Gwen and Mary Jane, and Columbia was into Stone — a favorite after starring in the studio’s “Superbad,” “The House Bunny” and “Zombieland” — for both roles. But as the search elongated, it decided to focus on casting Gwen, the more important role.
Sources said Mary Jane will not appear in the first movie, so a Gwen story line could provide and extra dose of gravitas, depending on how closely the studio and filmmakers hew to Marvel Comics lore.
In the comics, Gwen was Parker’s first love but died in a fight against the Green Goblin. The studio is not expected to have Green Goblin as the villain in order to distance itself from the previous trilogy (Philip Seymour Hoffman is on the shortlist for the new villain role), but it doesn’t preclude a similar story line to pack dramatic punch.
Stone is repped by WME and Raw Talent Management.
